Improving Thermal Stability of Proteins

Animal feed is comprised of an ingredient mixture that provides nutrition and promotes the health of pets and livestock. During the production process, feed is exposed to high temperatures and proteins may become inactivated or denatured. The Seeker desires innovative and cost-effective approaches to improve the thermal stability of these proteins.

This Theoretical Challenge requires only a written proposal.


One step within the feed manufacturing process includes pasteurization to eliminate microbes and pathogens. Although necessary for sterilization and pellet formation, high heat is detrimental to the activity and potency of certain proteins. Therefore, it is vitally important to preserve protein stability and the Seeker is searching for new methods to accomplish this through the use of food-grade ingredients.

Submissions to this Challenge must be received by 11:59 PM (US Eastern Time) on January 11, 2020.
