Any high school student planning on attending college knows that the SATs and ACTs are a big deal. It’s common to spend months studying, taking practice tests, and attending review classes to prepare to take them. While there is no federal standardized test that evaluates all high school students in the country, the SATs and ACTs are the next closest thing.
Educational technology site Brainly analyzed test data from across the U.S. to find the public high schools with the best average SAT and ACT scores. Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology in Alexandria, VA tops the list for highest average SAT score (1515), while Davidson Academy in Reno, NV takes top billing for highest average ACT score (33.9).
Interestingly, four of the top 10 high schools with the highest average SAT scores are in New Jersey, while four of the top 10 for ACT scores are in Texas. Two Texas high schools even cracked the top ten for both lists: Texas Academy of Mathematics and Science in Denton (8th for SAT scores and 2nd for ACT scores) and Jasper High School in Plano (10th for SAT scores and 8th for ACT scores).
