1968 Ford Mustang fastback on your office desk – LEGO introduced a model of the legendary racing car

Posted February 20, 2018

Now you can build your own 1968 Mustang fastback. The legendary car, commonly called America‘s favourite sports car, is not only a cool puzzle, but also a desk ornament. Ford and LEGO worked together to add the 1968 Mustang to the LEGO Speed Champions collection. While it is a model in the unique LEGO style, you can easily see Mustang‘s iconic features.

1968 Ford Mustang really was America’s favourite sports car. It was stylish, quick and relatively affordable. It was a good move for Ford too. Many manufacturers followed with similar recipes, but none of them could be as successful and Ford. Now fifty years later it is time to mark the occasion with some collection pieces.

This is a 183-piece Ford Mustang kit, resembling a racing car from the period. It is dark green with gold dual stripes and wheels. Racing pedigree is underlined by graphic stickers, while removable windscreen makes looking inside a little easier – there is a mini-figure driver wearing a classic racing suit. The kit also has a Ford-branded timing board.

Ford and LEGO worked close together to make the legendary pony car accurate and fun enough. The LEGO Ford Mustang does have a very important task on its hands – it should join the generations. Myra Lind, LEGO Speed Champions marketing manager, said: “The new Ford Mustang LEGO Speed Champions set gives parents and children the chance to share their passions – generations of fans have grown up building LEGO sets and spending time together behind the wheel. This partnership of iconic brands allows kids of all ages to enjoy the latest products from two great companies”. And it is a lot of work to introduce a licenced model to the market, because it has to be accurate enough to represent the legendary car, but it also has to feature unique LEGO styling.

It is not the first LEGO Ford. 1968 Ford Mustang fastback is joining the historic Ford GT40 and new Ford GT race cars, Ford F-150 Raptor high-performance off-road truck, a Ford Fiesta WRC rally car, a classic Ford hot rod and a 2015 Ford Mustang. All these cars make the LEGO Speed Champions Ford collection great, but it is likely that adult Ford fans will be the ones buying and assembling these kits.
