Why Xiaomi is usually mentioned along other brand names? What are Mijia, Viomi, Huami and ZMI?

Posted December 30, 2017

Everyone knows Xiaomi name by now. This company, started in Beijing in 2010, is one of the most valuable startups in the world. Xiaomi makes wearable electronics, home appliances, smart healthcare devices and much more. However, Xiaomi name is often accompanied by other brands, such as Viomi, Mijia, Huami and Zmi. What is this MI family? What‘s the difference between these product lines?

There are several brands in the MI ecosystem – each represents a different market segment.

Xiaomi was born back in April, 2010. It was immediately recognized as a hot startup and aimed to make high quality innovative products in China. The first Xiaomi step into the market was the release of MIUI software, based on Android operating system. In 2011 the first Xiaomi smartphone was introduced – it was only 6 years ago, but now the company is fourth largest smartphone manufacturers in the world.

From the very beginning it was clear that Xiaomi will expand to other market segments as well. The company wants to manufacture and market virtually everything. MI Ecosystem was created to cover all the different areas Xiaomi did expand into. MI includes a number of different companies and brands, including Mijia, Viomi, Huami and ZMI. So let’s take a look what products are marked with these names.

Mijia logo marks regular home appliances and simple products. Those are usually normal everyday items that Xiaomi managed to improve by introducing a modern design or some extra features. The first Mijia item was  a rice cooker. Chinese people love rice and eat it every day. However, all high-end rice cookers are made in Japan, which is why Xiaomi wanted to make a real Chinese rice cooker, which would be cheaper and at the same time better than alternatives at the same time. While the Mijia rice cooker had some smart features, Mijia pens are rather simple. They do, however, feature modern, elegant design and high-quality components, important from all over the world.

How a simple pen can be high-quality item? The mechanism of Mijia pens is tested to survive 50 000 turns.

Xiaomi wants to reserve the Mijia brand for smart devices only. Now Mijia already has Mijia 1080p, Mijia 360 IP cameras and some other products (including a pretty interesting lamp).

You might have heard Viomi name separately from Xiaomi brand. It is because Viomi manufactures various products, related to drinking water and they are usually marketed as Viomi items, instead of Xiaomi-Viomi. The first Viomi product was this quite elegant electric kettle.

Viomi electric kettle was launched for crowd-funding at . Of course, it isn’t just a simple kettle – no one would even consider such a casual item for crowd funding. VIOMI MH1Z – A 3.5L Electric Filter Kettle has a double filtration system with active carbon. The quality of drinking water is very important everywhere these days.

Viomi is not one-product brand. There is a cold water filter, known as VIOMI 3.5L Water Filter Pitcher Filtration Dispenser Cup, smart water heater VIOMI 4L Smart Instant Hot Water Dispenser and an insulated 460 ml mug.

One of the most important areas Xiaomi is working in is wearable electronics. Smart bracelets and watches are typically manufactured by Huami – a company, founded in 2014. Huami makes Xiaomi’s extremely popular Mi Band 2, as well as pretty impressive Amazfit smart watch.

Xiaomi Huami AMAZFIT Heart Rate Smartwatch features a classic watch design with round colourful touchscreen, 280 mAh battery and a number of useful functions. It will count your steps, measure heart rate, running speed, burnt calories, will log altitude and the route.

This watch will also remind you of missed calls, text messages, emails, will give you weather reports and a lot of other important information. The best part is that Amazfit is completely water and dust resistant.

Huami is a little different from other brands mentioned in this article. Xiaomi is not the only shareholder of the company. However, Xiaomi is the main partner and markets all Huami products.

Finally, ZMI is a brand, which covers most Xiaomi’s charging devices – cables, powerbanks and car chargers. For example, this ZMI HB810 is quite popular, because of how big and affordable it is.

ZMI HB810 is essentially a 10 000 mAh beterry, which holds enough power to charge your smartphone at least several times. As usual in Xiaomi range, this powerbank has additional functions – you can check its status using a simple app on your smartphone. The app will also warn you if you will be leaving the ZMI powerbank behind.

Of course, there are other names under MI umbrella – Yeelight helps Xiaomi with LED light manufacturing and Zhimi makes products, designed to purify air. However, in a lot of cases Xiaomi name is mentioned alone – it is a well-known brand, which Chinese take pride in.
