Christmas is just around the corner and you have to buy gifts already. A wrist watch is always a good idea and Ford has just shared a perfect gift for that car enthusiast you have in your circles. One company in Denmark is literally recycling classic cars into wrist watches and it is quite amazing. Always wanted a classic Ford Mustang? Now you can always carry a little piece of it.
A company called REC Watches is searching scrap yards for some historic cars that are far beyond repair. They look at these piles of rust that mean nothing to other people and see an opportunity. It is always sad to see a classic car go, because it means that at some point someone didn’t love it enough to keep it away from the scrap yard. However, as car enthusiasts can confirm, classic cars have some unexplainable charm, which can be preserved and recycled in a shape of a watch.
A classic Mustang-inspired watch features a dial, made from a real body panel of a Mustang. It also has a VIN number and year. Since these cars are old and beyond repair, you see all the scratches and marks, left by its epic life. Hand display is also made taking inspiration from the car’s speedometer. There is even a power dial designed to look like a fuel gauge – it shows remaining battery life. Christian Mygh, co-founder of the REC Watches, said: “Most people would just see a pile of metal, a ghost of a Mustang. We see something completely different – the soul of a car and a story that needs to be told. I’m not cutting up Mustangs. I’m bringing Mustangs that are beyond repair back to life as a watch”.
And there is a lot of history to be told. REC Watches collect a lot of information about the car and creates a bespoke video to go with every watch. Sometimes a rare car comes onto the target of the company and a new limited edition comes into life. Classic Ford Mustang came into the market in 1964, so a lot of these cars are already gone. A simple, yet beautiful (and expensive) watch is just a perfect little present for a car lover. However, you don’t have to choose one made from a Mustang – REC Watches has collections for old Porsche 911’s and classic Mini Coopers as well. The assortment is bound to grow in the near future.
Of course, there will be people, who will say that these cars need to be rescued instead of being recycled. However, not every car can be restored. Some become “parts” and eventually cross the point of no return and leave for the scrap yard. And, you should not forget, that the original Ford Mustang was very popular and even now it is not a very rare car.
