At the end of October we‘re going to have another big car show – Tokyo Motor Show 2017 is starting at October 27th. Car manufacturers are already preparing their concepts and reveals. Some pictures of concepts have been posted already. For example Toyota revealed how it imagines a toolbox on wheels, which is also very joyful.
You think words “Toolbox” and “Joy” don’t really go together? Well, but that’s how Toyota named its new concept crossover – Tj Cruiser. It is a big van-like crossover with a face of a military SUV. It is difficult to say really, what it is – a van or an SUV. But it is very practical and Toyota says it is going to be a lot of fun to drive. Toyota says it is a completely new genre of crossover.
Tj Cruiser has a chunky off-road van look. Its front grille looks remarkably as something meant for military and the entire car feature right angles and vertical surfaces. It has sliding doors in the rear which make it easy to enter the vehicle in tight parking spots or to load larger items. Interestingly, the tailgate is hinged further on the roof, not at the very edge as usual. This makes the opening just that little bit larger. Finally, the paint finish of the Tj Cruiser is not ordinary either – the car has a special extremely durable scratch-resistant coating on its hood, roof, and fenders. Interestingly, the engine cover opens forward – that is quite an unusual design decision and it is unlikely to carry over to the production model.
In the interior of the car you will see even more clever practical solutions. All passenger seats can be folded down flat, creating a huge space for cargo. Backs of all these seats are also covered in some durable material, so that it would not get damaged by loading, for example, dirty bicycles. When all seats are folded, you can carry 3 metre long items such as surfboards. Furthermore, taller items are not going to be a problem either, because seat cushion behind the driver’s seat folds up, leaving a large opening for groceries, or, let’s say, a plant.
As far as numbers go, we don’t know much yet. Toyota says that it will be powered by a hybrid system (you can tell that by a blue badge as well), built upon a 2 litre engine. And as far as SUV credentials go, buyers will be able to choose from a front-wheel-drive and four-wheel-drive versions. But we don’t even know if it will go into production and how it will look like if it does. We kind of hope to see it on the streets someday just because it looks so different from everything else on the road.
