SolarGaps are a window blinds with integrated energy generating solar panels. It saves energy by keeping incoming sunlight from heating a room up and reduce the need to run an air conditioner. Accumulated energy could be used by home appliances keeping electricity bills lower. Each slat is equipped with monocrystalline solar panels, which generate electricity via sunlight that they’re blocking. The blinds use a light sensor to track the sun by changing the angle of the slats in order to best absorb its rays.
SolarGaps are able to generate up to 100 watt-hours of energy when mounted on the outside of a window, or up to 50 watt-hours when mounted inside. Produced energy can be fed back into the grid and sold to the local utility company, stored in a battery for later use, or it can be used as it’s being generated. The blinds can also be manually operated via an iOS/Android app. The app lets users set the blinds on a schedule, monitor how much energy they’re producing, or set them so that they open whenever someone enters the room, because of integrated motion sensor.
