Bentley now has probably the best SUV in the world – the amazing Bentayga. But it is still a high-performance automobile manufacturer, so it really needs a small sports car. And, of course, it is in the plans already. However, it may be fully electric, just to show the world that electric cars can be a lot of fun too.
We already have fast electric cars – there is no point talking about them in future tense. However, Rimac is track ready hypercar, while Tesla, although full of tech, is really not that luxurious. So Bentley sniffed out this market place and wants to itself. It introduced EXP 12 Speed 6e concept car at the 2017 Auto Shanghai. It is extremely pretty, extremely luxurious and will be very quiet and refined – a true Bentley.
In fact, Speed 6 is not a new concept. Bentley introduced it back in 2015 at the Geneva Motor Show. That concept, called EXP 10, was not fully electric though. It was a hybrid, which did not really make people that happy. Copper elements throughout the car gave a clear hint about it using an electric motor somewhere, but the 6 in the name also indicated that the engine has 6 cylinders. So Bentley Speed 6 would be offered with V6 hybrid, V8, possibly a W12 and electric powertrains. Speed 6e, introduced now, is the latest addition to the range.
Bentley says that Speed 6e will have company’s signature surging torque and grand touring capabilities. It is effortless performance that Bentley owners enjoy and smooth ownership experience. It will be eventuated in electric car too, as it will feature rapid inductive charging and state-of-the-art on board concierge-style services. Of course, range will have to be quite large too for the car to be useful in grand touring trips.
How impressive range is going to be? London to Paris or Milan to Monaco is going to take less than a single charge. But Bentley did not forget about luxury. Interior is crafted from premium hand-stitched leather, cut-glass sections on the steering wheel contain the controls for media, and the main screen is a large OLED embedded in a solid piece of elegantly curved glass.
Exterior is extremely sleek too. Large wheels and the overall silhouette is recognizable Bentley, as are rectangular grill and quadruple headlights. It will be offered as a convertible and coupe version, both of which will definitely stand out from the crowd. Rear wheel arches are extended and the rear portion of the car looks elegant and almost understated. Bonnet and sides are sculpted and make Speed 6 look even more dynamic.
Bentley Speed 6 will go on sale next year. It is likely that electric car will enter the market a bit later, but V6 and V8 versions are probably going to be more popular anyway. There is still no information about the price or performance, but soon it will be revealed. Another dream car? Or electric powertrain just doesn’t cut it in this package?
