Linear Motors as a Viable Alternative to Conventional Technologies

Posted August 10, 2016

It was not until late 80’s and early 90 that linear motors became easily acceptable in most engineering work following technological advancement which enabled their easier control. The development of wi-fi control of actuators was such a major advancement that brought about the breakthrough.

The development of control applications for actuators has made linear motors more attractive as compared to conventional technology. One major reason for this is that linear motors are easy to fit into most machines and can integrate with a variety of machines. This is mainly because they are more rugged compared to conventional technology and their permanent magnets are enclosed making them more attractive.

Further development on the linear motors that makes them better compared to conventional technology is the combination of small size, speed and acceleration of up to 25’g. The ability to attain high speeds and a guarantee of longevity gives linear motors an upper hand as compared to conventional technology. Compared to ball screw actuators, linear motors can last up to ten times longer and speed hence improving production.

The introduction of stainless steel actuators has enabled their use is foods production since hygiene is maintained. The ability to produce enough energy for industrial production has greatly favored d linear motors. Actuator cooling for liner stainless steel motors can also done using water unlike in conventional technology.

The linear motors have further been developed to complement conventional pneumatics. This comes in handy since linear motors are fast and have more accurate positioning capabilities and excellent linearity. The air cushioning breaking system applied on pneumatics using linear motors minimizes friction reducing routine maintenance and lubrication.

Compared to conventional technology, linear motors are smaller in size but produce much more power, precision and speed as compared to conventional technologies.
