Prime Air is Amazon future service that will deliver packages up to five pounds in 30 minutes or less using small drones. Prime Air vehicle weights less than 55 pounds and will fly under 400 feet. It uses a “sense and avoid” technology, as well as a high degree of automation, to safely operate beyond the line of sight to distances of 10 miles.
It takes off and lands vertically, but then it switches to a regular horizontal flight mode, which is far more efficient. It’s basically part helicopter, part airplane. With this new design, the drone can cover over 15 miles and fly over 55 mph. Once it arrives at its intended location, it’ll scan the area and look for a landing spot.
