Most of us do not have any real chance of going into space. But what about getting your name imprinted on the surface of moon, like forever. Lets check that out.
With the recent movie releases like The Gravity, Interstellar and The Martian, people have started developing more interest in Space technology. Also some astrophysicists like Neil de Grasse Tyson are often treated like rockstars popularizing this field even more. So, space technology is in, once again.
But statistically most of us do not have any realistic chance of going into space. But we might be able to get our name imprinted on the surface of moon very soon. Something like Neil Armstrong’s first footprint on the moon.
This week “Lift-off Technologies Corporation” was granted a patent that makes it possible to create designs on the surface of an extraterrestrial body like moon or even mars.
A rocket is first used to send a rover from the Earth. A lunar module, seperates from the rocket and lands on the moon. Then the rover comes out of the module onto the moon surface.
The rover includes a scrapper attached at the back, which helps the rover make marks on the moon’s surface as it moves around The ground station on earth transmits a design pattern to the rover. The design pattern may be ordered by a customer. The robot then systematically moves around the surface, scrapping the soil along the path, thereby creating the design pattern on the moon surface. A design, once made on the lunar surface, has a very low probability of being altered by natural or human activity. So this is sort of, written in stone.
Also, the robot can make the design large enough so that it is visible using telescopes from earth. The robot then clicks a photo of the imprint on the surface and sends back to the ground station on earth.
