3 Ways to Use Interior Design & Tech to ‘Green Up’ the Workplace

Business owners across the country who wish to make their companies more eco-friendly have a wide variety of options from which to choose. What makes going green at work particularly attractive is that virtually every business can do at least one thing to reduce their carbon footprint.

There are plenty of ways to use both interior design and technology to green up a business:

Switch to the Cloud & the Sun

By using greener technology choices, companies can use less power and reduce their carbon footprint at the same time. As Forbes notes, many businesses have servers that are much bigger than they truly need. This means they are paying to power something that they are not using it to full capacity. By using cloud computing, server services and applications are taken out of the business and run in an offsite center, which can drastically reduce the amount of energy that is used every day. In addition, some IT companies have started to produce “green” servers and data storage systems that use less energy to run and cool. For example, IBM is working on using solar energy to power its products.

Select Eco-Friendly Window Treatments that Block Sunlight

Another great way to make an office more eco-friendly is to replace old and tired mini-blinds or curtains with new window treatments that can help reduce energy use. In offices with a lot of windows, a great deal of heat can come in through the windows on warm days, which often requires the HVAC system to run continuously. Look for window treatments that effectively and attractively block sunlight to keep spaces cooler in the summer. In turn, this will reduce the amount of energy a company uses to run the HVAC. Business owners who like the look of blinds can choose eco-friendly options like bamboo, and woven wooden shades are also another green option that can help reduce the amount of sunlight streaming into an office.

Choose Sustainable Furniture and Flooring

One of the best ways to make a company more eco-friendly is to upgrade as much of the interior furnishings as possible with sustainable furniture and flooring. Business owners can look for local furniture companies that specialize in this type of furniture, or they can research to see if the products they are interested in are certified by the Forest Stewardship Council. This organization is devoted to maintaining the nation’s woodlands. In addition to sustainable wood furniture, business owners can also purchase items made from repurposed or recycled materials. For example, old wood can be used again for desks and filing cabinets and glass and metal can also be given new life in various decorative products. Urban Remains is a company that is devoted to transforming materials like wood into rustic and interesting looking items, many of which would be at home in an office or company.

Also, when it’s time to install new flooring, instead of hardwood or other less eco-friendly choices, business owners can select bamboo, which has the nice look and feel of traditional wood but is made from plants that are not destroyed to produce the needed materials.
