India’s Aakash Tablet Maker Enters USA With $38 Tablet

London-based Datawind, famously known for building India’s cheapest tablet Aakash, has started selling its products in the US. Priced from $37.99 till $149.99, the products are available for order online. These devices are available in three different configurations – UbiSlate 7Ci, UbiSlate 7C+ and UbiSlate 3G7 with the 7Ci being the cheapest one. The 3G7 model is at the top-end of the model line up.

Specifications for the UbiSlate are not in any way world beating. All of the models run on 512 MB of RAM and have only 4GB of internal memory which is expandable up to 32GB. The screen size is 7″ TFT Capacitive with a resolution of 800×480 pixels. Only the 3G7 has a higher spec with 1024×600. The devices will run on Android 4.0 with the 3G7 being given Android 4.1. Datawind has tied up with Red Pocket Mobile to provide free internet for a year on some of these models.The company claims that they have developed a technology to compress and speed up web content by 10x to 30x. Sunnet Singh Tuli, CEO of Datawind says, “Using our patented technology, we are able to eliminate the need for contracts and monthly fees, making it easy to get on the Internet, right out of the box.”

With these models, Datawind is aiming to tap schools and low-income consumers. The older specifications will mean that manufacturing costs will be lower. “The development for the tablet stemmed from the realization that lack of Internet adoption in many parts of the world was primarily because of lack of affordability. Our aim is to bridge the gap by offering cost-effective, high-specification devices and Internet-access that offer excellent value to all,” Sunnet adds. The devices will be sold through more retailers after the CES (Consumer Electronics Show) in January next year.
