Winfrontier Co Ltd will release a smartphone application that takes the image of digital blood flow with a smartphone camera and calculates the mental relaxation level of the user in September 2013.
Winfrontier is a Japan-based firm that provides digital health-related services using sensors. And it calls the application “Zen Breathing Method & Relaxing Effect Measurement Application.”
The user launches the application and watches the breathing method shown with the picture of an advisor. After breathing as instructed by the application, the user puts his/her forefinger on the camera of the phone and presses the “measurement button” of the application. Then, the change of the blood’s brightness (it becomes dark when blood flows) is measured.
The brightness data is converted to waveforms and analyzed using heart-rate variability. Based on data such as the fluctuation of the interval between heartbeats, a “relaxation index” is calculated.
The application is available only for the iPhone. Its price will be ¥500 (approx US$5.11).
