We read so many news about “Tesla killers” that it finally got old. None of the impressive cars actually got produced and Tesla is still the leader of the industry. But that might change, because Faraday Future, company that has its own Formula E team, just launched its first production car FF 91. Reservations are already available, factory is being built and cars are already working, so it must be real.
FF 91 certainly has the performance to be the Tesla killer. It has a 130 kWh battery, which is the highest energy density battery in the world, 783 kW power motor and over 700 km of range. It features a multi-motor setup, enabling real-time torque vectoring to the rear wheels and rear-wheel steering. Result should be nice handling and, more importantly, record-breaking 0-60 mph time of 2.39 seconds. FF 91 also has a retractable 3D lidar, which includes a complex sensor system, cameras instead of mirrors and Driverless Valet parking.
FF 91 looks a bit like a cross over. Its design was driven by aerodynamics and has many smart features. Doors can be opened automatically and the opening itself is very wide for easy entrance. FF 91 will recognize its driver and will display an owner confirmation sequence when he approaches. Vehicle’s rocker panel also helps parking – user just needs to press some buttons to ask the car to park itself. It can also be done on a smartphone. Interior is supposed to make users feel more rested and energized. Rear seats recline quite a bit, allowing passengers to make themselves comfortable. Seats also massage people, of course.
New FF 91 will supposedly have industry-leading infotainment system, which will learn driver’s preferences to provide a more personalized experience. Car will remember preferred seating positions, favourite music and movies, ideal temperatures, and driving style settings. Interestingly, FF 91 will also feature facial recognition, which will be able to tell what mood the driver is in.
So FF 91 is going to be full of technology, extremely quick and efficient. But will it be enough to capture people’s imagination. Faraday Future tried really hard during their presentation of the car and people seemed to like it, even though it was not particularly smooth. Will it be Tesla killer or just another fake promise? Time will tell.
